The University of Cantabria (UC) is the only on-site public institution to offer official university study courses in the self-governed region of Cantabria. It is a young, dynamic public university, founded in 1972, whose main objective is to contribute to social progress via its commitment to teaching and scientific excellence. To achieve these goals, it aims at constant quality control of its work, which means that all its teaching, research and administrative activities continually undergo review and improvement processes. It is precisely this demanding nature that has led it to be considered as one of the ten best universities in the country for quality and scientific productivity.

GER UCGreen Engineering and Resources is a Research Group formed by researchers from the University of Cantabria (Department of Chemistry and Process & Resource Engineering, ETSIIT).

The University of Cantabria (UC) is one of the three universities that has been in the Top 10 list of the main Spanish rankings both in education as well as in research quality.

It is a modern public institution whose main purpose is to contribute to social progress through a firm commitment to teaching and scientific excellence.

The UC confers a wide range of official degrees within graduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs. Since its creation in 1972, it has provided university education for more than 40,000 students.

The UC provides students with a wide range of resources, enabling them to acquire an allround Education. Within this context, its study programs seek the right balance between practice and theory, and which students can choose to supplement with complementary services such as internship programs, access to new technologies, exchange programs with foreign universities, guidance and tutorial activities, etc.

The UC gives special importance to students’ command of foreign languages, which is why it offers them courses in various languages. UC stipulates that all graduates must have an English level which will allow them to communicate fluently.

The scientific work developed in the UC is high-quality and some of its research groups are to be found amongst the leaders at an international level in their area of knowledge.

The UC is also a social, cultural and economic energizer in the autonomous region of Cantabria. This activity produces innovation for the business environment, development of cultural activities, social participation and knowledge generation. With this objective in mind, the UC collaborates with the main public and private agents within the social and economic environment of Cantabria, through the strategic project Cantabria International Campus.

The International Society for the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials, is an international non-profit organization founded in 1992 to promote and coordinate the exchange of information regarding the environmental and technical aspects of construction with industrial by-products.

Industrial by-products include residues from industrial processes such as:

  • Metallurgical slag
  • Foundry sand
  • Blasting grit
  • Fly ash and bottom ash from power plants or municipal and hazardous waste incinerators
  • Here goes the list item
  • Flue gas desulphurisation sludge
  • Mine tailings
  • Demolition waste
  • Soils contaminated by industrial activities
  • Stabilized or treated residues and soils

ISCOWA members, from 19 different countries>, are involved with the utilization of these alternative materials in construction applications such as fill, roadbase, cement, concrete, ceramic products and roofing materials.

The WASCON conference is the main event organized by ISCOWA. This international conference on the issue of integration of secondary raw materials in the field of civil engineering and construction has been organized every three years since 1991.

In the future, ISCOWA will focus on the following points:

  • Continue to enhance the ISCOWA network with more scientists and engineers from industry. So, we invite all interested scientists and engineers to contact us.
  • Increase membership in emerging and developing countries. To date, only few people from emerging or developing countries are ISCOWA members. Nevertheless, we believe that also there sustainable waste management and the use of recycled materials in construction is of high interest, so that having access to know-how and to a network on these matters may prove highly valuable.
  • To continue to develop closer connection with industry and its practice and experience.
