Jannie van Deventer was educated in South Africa, where he was Head of Chemical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1995 he accepted a Chair at the University of Melbourne, where he served as Dean of Engineering from 2003 to 2007. Since 2010 he is an Honorary Professor and continues research into alkali-activated cement (AAC) and mineral processing. Since 2006 Jannie has been the CEO of Zeobond, which is commercialising AAC. He previously commercialised computer vision and gold extraction in the mineral industry. His publication record of 600+ papers includes 290 journal papers. He is author of the highest ever cited papers in two journals. With 9,000 citations and an h-index of 50 he is the world’s highest cited researcher in cement chemistry.

An engineering graduate from Ghent University (Belgium, 1998), Hans Saveyn started his professional career at ExxonMobil, before taking up an academic research position in the field of wastewater and sludge treatment. After obtaining his PhD, he became assistant professor at his alma mater and visiting research fellow at the University of Delaware (USA) and the CNRS (France). In October 2010, he joined the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. At the JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (Seville, Spain), he has been managing a wide range of projects related to end-of-waste, recycling and resource optimization as well as the review of the Best Available Techniques Reference document (BREF) on the management of waste from the extractive industries.

Research topics of eco-efficient materials and construction waste, environmental impact leaching, pavements and roads, concrete durability and bituminous mixtures. He has published on these issues, since 1967 more than 80 articles and books, including Progress of Recycling in the Built Environment, Vol 8 RILEM STATE REPORTS OF ART “2013” .ha directed 22 doctoral theses and 30 master Th., has delivered invited lectures in Spain, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Brazil, Italy, Portugal and China. It has been Chairman of the Committees RILEM TC-217 and TC-198 URM. He has served on committees AENOR materials, PIARC and CEN.

An experienced operations manager and environmental professional with a BSc Honours degree in Chemistry, Ian joined the NISP West Midlands team in August 2007 as Regional Manager for the West Midlands. Since completing his degree at the University of Sheffield, Ian has gained 17 years of experience within the Food and Drink sector. His career has seen him take up a number of diverse management roles in manufacturing operations, scientific services, project management and most recently the environmental arena. His current responsibilities include leading the strategic and operational delivery of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) in England and acting as lead consultant in a BP sponsored industrial symbiosis project centred on the Iskenderun Bay area of Turkey. Ian has also led a number of successful construction related activities within International Synergies. This has included an Innovate UK funded project to identify alternative raw materials for the built environment and a commercial contract assisting Highways England to identify solutions to resource criticality issues in major schemes. Ian has also helped establish MIROG (Major Infrastructure Resource Opportunities Group) in the UK, which enables major infrastructure providers to identify opportunities to share materials across large construction projects.
